"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several high-profile fans have also begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos repeatedly feature them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Historic Nod

The band have called into a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

But the band will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
