A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

However the odds had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
