The former US president’s most recent warning to introduce an further complete levy on Chinese goods has been called a “typical example” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Beijing administration.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson also stated that the nation could implement its own unspecified “countermeasures” if the US President follows through on his warning, emphasizing that the country was “unafraid” of a potential trade war.

This past Friday, Trump responded at China’s decision to strengthen its regulations for overseas sales of critical elements, charging the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “hostage”.

He also vowed to cancel a arranged meeting with Beijing’s head of state President Xi, which was expected to take place during a meeting in South Korea before the month ends.

The former president’s remarks on Friday rattled financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index falling by 2.7%, marking its largest decline since earlier this year.

His comments renewed apprehensions of a trade conflict between the United States and China.

This past spring, the two sides had reached an agreement to eliminate significant levies on each other’s imports, which had raised the prospect of commerce ceasing between the two nations.

Consequently, United States levies on products from China facing an extra 30% levy compared with the year’s onset, while American products entering the Chinese market incur a 10% tariff.

China’s latest remarks – issued by the relevant government department in the format of formal replies to media inquiries – echoed terminology from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.

Officials denounced US export restrictions on semiconductors and chips while justifying Beijing’s overseas sale regulations on key elements as “normal actions” to safeguard state interests and that of all nations.

The official stated that for “many years”, the America had “overstretched the concept of domestic safety, abused export control measures and “implemented” unfair treatments against China.

“Using” trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to engage with the Chinese government,” their representative stated.

“China’s position on a trade conflict has remained unchanging: we do not want one, but we are fearless of one.”

Last week, Beijing revealed it was strengthening foreign shipment restrictions on rare earths and other materials vital for advanced tech manufacturing.

This was seen as a key move, as the country processes about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in products such as solar panels and mobile phones.

The recent comments from the US and China are being viewed by analysts as a strategy of strengthening positions prior to upcoming negotiations.

It is unclear whether a summit between the former president and President Xi, expected at a high-level meeting in Seoul in the coming weeks, will take place as planned.
