The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
