No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
