Seven accused individuals of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
