Each time a major honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
