In the dying moments, sheer ecstasy broke out for Chelsea and interim manager Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández stabbed home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola in a state of despair and provided the temporary Chelsea manager a truly golden moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane could be billed as the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's pivotal intervention one to warm the 40-year-old for years to come.

A Stark Contrast in Pedigree

On the City bench was the generation's pre-eminent figure, a man with 40 trophies for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, was a one-time trainer at non-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had worked in City's own academy and arrived to make his first-team debut after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, most notably Chelsea's key midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed nearly insurmountable.
