The English team's Fortunate Getaway - What Issues Need Addressing?

'What direction should they take now?'

Was it luck favouring the English squad, or the simple unavoidable nature when planning a cricket tournament amid Sri Lanka's rainy period?

Either way, the English team narrowly escaped against Pakistan this past Wednesday - big time.

They were undefeated in three matches, cruising through the group stage with just a struggling Pakistani side blocking their path to entering crucial encounters against India and Australia unbeaten.

It should have been straightforward progress: The English team has historically lost just one match against Pakistan, in a T20 in 2013, and not once in the 50-over format.

But instead of carrying forward their winning form toward those crucial matches versus the competition's top contenders, they have been jolted by a shuddering wake-up call.

England were thoroughly outplayed during twenty-five overs prior to the initial rainfall at the Colombo venue, collapsing to seventy-nine for seven while Pakistani fast bowlers expertly utilised a challenging yet manageable pitch, followed by spin bowlers taking over on England's fragile middle order.

Subsequently, precipitation unfairly prevented the Pakistani team a notable victory after it cleared to give them an hour of hope and enough time to reach 34-0 in pursuit of 113, England's smiles of relief contrasted with captain Fatima Sana's despondence while the Colombo playing field flooded.

This was England's lucky escape leaving them no option but to learn from it.

Moving forward, it's improbable they'll escape another such situation.

Pakistan Expose Glaring Weakness

This tournament's fixture list is tricky. Looking at England specifically, the squad is competing in their preliminary matches across four different venues, all providing varying playing conditions demanding essentially learning on the job.

Versus the Sri Lankan team just four days ago, the English played on a distinct pitch that provided turn, bounce and very little for the seamers. This surface differed, while English batters failed to adjust rapidly to it.

The Pakistani side possessed definite strategies and executed them, constantly challenging the English team's vulnerable batting through moving the ball sharply toward right-handed batters.

Diana Baig's successful delivery against Tammy Beaumont deviated dramatically off the pitch, the opening batter attempting an extravagant leave just to witness the ball clatter into her off stump.

Nat Sciver-Brunt's wicket moved 2.5 degrees from the surface, comparable to the turn typically seen from an off-spinner, and the England skipper's reaction with open arms and a look of disbelief said it all - the team likely hadn't practiced for nor expected this.

Amy Jones similarly lost her wicket to Fatima's bowling, that delivery deviating two degrees from the surface, and the ball shaped one point six degrees for Heather Knight's lbw.

This marked the initial occasion in any format where England's top seven batters were all either bowled or leg-before since January 1908, testament to Pakistan's discipline aiming consistently at the wickets.

By the end of England's revised 31 overs, they had faced 61 balls that would have struck the wickets. They surrendered eight batters to them while managing only twenty-three runs.

Australian and Indian Teams Await Their Turn

'England confronts various difficulties' - Emma Lamb dismissed by Sadia

England travel to Indore for their upcoming two matches to face their most challenging rivals against India this Sunday, and versus Australia October twenty-second.

Neither are ideal opponents to be facing with batting weaknesses needing correction but the pitches there are anticipated as more even and favorable to batters.

Heather Knight's determined approach that saved the team versus Bangladesh and Nat Sciver-Brunt's quality guaranteed they achieved a winning total against the Sri Lankan side, yet when both departed quickly facing Pakistan, England could not recover.

{"Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight have scored more runs collectively than their team-mates combined at this tournament," Former championship player Alex Hartley said on broadcast coverage. "This statistic speaks volumes, and neither of them batted during the opening game. That is a concern."

Beaumont and Jones have struggled versus moving deliveries - partnerships of six, twenty-four and thirteen after pursuing only seventy runs in the opener against South Africa - however the coach's initial decision was to demonstrate confidence and re-promote Jones, making it improbable she'll separate the combination.

Following the top two batters, the team's third-most productive player has been Charlie Dean at number eight scoring a solid twenty-seven not out during a nervous run-chase versus Bangladesh, a useful nineteen against Sri Lanka and she top-scored with 33 against Pakistan.

Occasional signs of potential from Alice Capsey batting seventh however Sophia Dunkley and Emma Lamb are struggling to start their batting versus spin bowling in the middle batting positions.

Emma Lamb has accumulated eighteen runs across three batting attempts while Sophia Dunkley managed twenty-nine, both losing their wickets to spin, with Lamb being required to perform an unaccustomed position.

When batting in the top three, Lamb averages 44 in 61 innings with five centuries. These three innings here represent her initial experience at number six professionally in the 50-over format.

Danielle Wyatt-Hodge represents England's unused batter among substitutes, having previously batted in middle positions for a number of years, so it will be interesting to observe the duration the Lamb trial persists.

England may have dodged an embarrassing slip-up in this instance, yet remains conscious that circumstances won't to get any easier.

India and Australia await. Any stumbles versus these opponents and England's campaign could quickly fall flat.
