The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
