Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior official said the vandalism made him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
