Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
